How much does air cooling matter if you're using water cooling?

I'm going to be using waterblocks on the CPU and GPU so my question is will fans still be truly necessary in a computer case if I'm water cooling?

Yes, they still are a must, because stagnant air is still going to be heated by the components, mainly the chipset and PWM area. Now, you don't have to go all out and order 5 Tornadoes, but get around 30 CFM flowing through the case.

Yea, I'm thinking just that. 2 fans should be sufficient if the 2 most heat-intensive components are already taken care of with liquid cooling.

Since I'm buying the Lian Li PC-V1100, there is only an 120mm exhaust fan in the upper section that houses the motherboard. The bottom section has an intake (sort of, its at the bottom of the case instead of the front). That should be fine though, right?

Even better, considering heat rises.

How about if I put passive cooling on the chipset. Will the fact that only 1 exhaust fan will be pumping warm air out have any effect on the temps?

Of course it will! You need active cooling on a chipset, passive just doesn't cut it.

Edit: The intake fan somewhat blows air over the chipset, though it's about 8 inches away.

Yeah, I prefer active versus passive, mainly because if there's ever that instance where it does get very hot, you always have headroom with active.
