i meant the one boosted from the FET. the actual feed to the fan, which would still be a binary signal. so turning that 12v/0v on/off power feed into an average of that.

Well if you took an average of 12 and 0 it would be 6 all the time lol. The ideal voltage against time curve would be a sine curve but with the peaks pointed and only the troughs curved. This would be like, impossible to do. Would require some serious electronics.

no... you know how PWM works. the average depends on how much time signal is 12v, and how much of the time its 0v.

no they're not. if they were they wouldnt do much for fan controlling...
if the duty cycle isnt variable, there is no controlling factor.

Yes they are equal lol. The amount of time 12v and 0v is the same, but it is the time that is varied, i.e., the frequency.

A and B deliver the same power to the fan (the area under the graph)
C and D do not have equal time.... the on's are shorter than the off's on C, and vice versa on D.
