THat's news to me. No where in any literature or white papers I have read does it say anything about warranty hinging on cooling used. Link/proof please.

Was about to reply the same thing... Now altering the CPU in any way would break warranty, such as lapping, but other than that....

I'm just going to play it safe here, I didn't spend $100 on a water block not to get the best performance possible. I just ordered a new one and I'm going to send this one back.

Another bad thing that the picture didn't show is a slight groove in the bottom of the block. I cannot feel it with my finger nail, but I can see it so it is there.

Maybe this one just slipped through QC or something. Guess I will have to wait till next week to get my rig up and running again

That's because they can't check and see what you clocked it to. You most likely did a FSB overclock. I think the reason overclocking isn't going to void a warranty is because it's not dependant on the CPU unless you vary the multi. Now I can see overvolting to be a breach of warranty. But still... How do you tell it has been overvolted? Burnt smell? Short circuit marks? Pretty much any evidence of overvolting can be attributed to something else.

I recently lapped my HK 3.0, last night to be exact - disassembled - and my temps rose 6C. It may be an error with a loose o-ring or maybe the channels are dirty but for right now my evidence says don't lap. I will conduct more experiments when I get home today to make sure.

I did make some interesting discoveries. Though some where obvious... For one, the HK 3.0 bow is caused by the top piece of the block, not the plate itself and therefore it can be lapped. I lapped mine to a perfectly flat shine, according to a few new razors, and then re-assembled. The HK 3.0 bottom plate retained it's bow when assembled.

Another thing I discovered was they are actually rather thick. I was able to lap this the first time and then go over it again with some 800, taking off a few more layers and then polish it with a 2500 grit and I don't appear to have compromised the integrity of the contact plate. I had heard of people lapping too much off and actually puncturing through the channels.

There is also only one, out of a possible 2, correct way to mount the contact plate for the HK 3.0. If you will look closely you can see the contact plate has slight angles at the end of each of the channels. These angles need to be pointed towards the outlet for the block.
^My original post^

I re-mounted the HK 3.0 5 times just to make sure that it wasn't a mounting issue. The temp rise was still there.

Today I removed the block from my loop and dis-assembled it. Both o-rings were in place but as I removed the block I could hear the small silver plate on the inside rattling. As I removed the contact plate the silver "pressure" plate came with it so I guess I will never know if that was the problem, other than that the block looked great. It had a bit of tarnish on it so I removed it with a quick surface lap, re-assembled the block, taking great care to make sure the silver plate was in place. I then re-applied TIM and re-mounted the block.

Not only did the 6C jump disappear, I was able to dial in the mounting pressure and get a 1C drop in load temps.

I wish I had recorded the original temps of my block before the original lap. It was a very, very slight lap to an area about as large as a dime in the center of the block (it was dis-assembled). I think I say around a 3-4C drop in temps if I remember.

No, the first lap got me a 3-4C drop in temps (IIRC), it was a very small lap in the very center of the contact plate (that's just how it decided to lap). The second lapping which was a lap of the entire bottom side of the contact plate gained me an extra 1C. This is due to the bow that is designed into the HK 3.0.

Ah thanks for the clarification...in that case I still won't lap my HK. But thanks for the experiment in lapping an HK. Tis very informative.

It would be very useful if you could make a thread on this Shrimpykins, I'm sure there's a few people out there that are thinking about lapping the HK.
