Default I need some help... Heatkiller 3.0 LT

Okay.. so I got my WC setup all together and it seems to work pretty decent, except for one thing, I'm using a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P and when I put the Heatkiller on, I feel like I can't get it to touch the CPU all the way because it pushes down on the capacitors to the left of the CPU socket, see picture:

I get decent temps at Idle at stock speeds:

29C Idle

But when I put it under load, it doesn't just gradually shoot up, it goes straight to 60 - 65C as soon as I press start for Prime95, then it will go up a little bit more after that, which I feel is pretty high for stock and a WC setup.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm thinking that I need to switch to a block that isn't as wide as the Heatkiller, because in fact, I tightened the screws a little too hard the first time I put it on and actually dented the top of a couple of the capacitors, so I really don't think it's making full contact...

I was thinking about switching to the new Swiftech block, it looks like it's not as wide as the Heatkiller.

If anyone has any experience in this, I would appreciate any information given to me!

Thanks,
Andrew

EDIT: Also I tried to overclock it to 3.2ghz for kicks and giggles, and it basically reached the thermal threshold within a matter of minutes under Prime95.

What tension are you mounting the block with? Did you measure the distance between the top of the allen screw and the base plate?

Also, are you mounting it horizontally or vertically - an actual picture would help a lot.

Tons of pictures there.

And the tension I'm mounting it with is pretty close to what they specify, in fact no matter what tension I use (unless I use very little) the temps don't fluctuate. So I just have this feeling that the block isn't making contact completely with the cpu, because I put a decent amount of TIM on the cpu and tightened down the block, then took it off, jsut to make sure it was seating, and there was barely any TIM on one half of the block, and basically just in spotted areas.

Here are some threads I found that may help... It seems you have to slightly bend the caps to get it in. Doesn't seem like it's that big of a deal...

Are you using the dot in the center technique for the TIM? Too much TIM will impede heat transfer and I believe you have to tighten in the x pattern to get the most consistent spread; though with more sloshy TIMs, it shouldn't matter.

Try mounting again without tim and see how much give the caps have? Also, I'm a bit worried about those fans you have on there: slipstream = low static pressure = not much air through a radiator. Not sure which model Noctuas you have but you definitely want some higher static pressure fans as those black ices have some pretty high FPI densities I believe.

WOW! 28C Idle, and so far 10 minutes on Prime95 45C load!

Thanks a lot man! In my excitement I forgot to reapply the TIM because I just wanted to ensure it was possible, but so far so good! Now it's finally performing to my expectations!

Andrew

Also, is it normal for one core to be just way lower than the others? Like 3 of them are at 45C and one of them is at 40C, it's been like that no matter how it's been mounted.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the fans seems to be working pretty decently? The Scythe blows air through that 120mm like crazy!

And yes I know that they aren't really high pressure fans but they are what I had, and I paid about $20 each for the Noctua's so they are going to get some use before I retire them lol

Yah, I guess it's either something in the bowing of the water block or the concavity of the IHS. If you look closely at it the next time you reapply TIM, you'll see the edges bulge a bit. My cores are usually vary by 2-5C.

Glad it worked out!

i was wondering that same thing, a few people were saying it could be cuz of HT, idk. but yeah same thing for me like 5c difference

this is after like 4hrs, also ur temps are making me want to replace these stocks fans, errr, now i gotta spend more money, oh well . also are those temps at stock speed im guessing.
