Lightbulb Hey another noob wanting to go WC

Ah, how to start. Well what I have is in my sig, should have all those parts by Thursday. I have been extremely fascinated with WCed system pics while I was doing my normal weeks of research while I figured out what to buy for a comp.

You can see from my sig I'm on a lame *** budget . Any way around 12:00 AM or earlier I ran across that Corsair H20, and it really got me looking into maybe doing my own WC with how cheap it was.

Now its 5:18 AM.... I need to grab an hours sleep before work but im pretty set one doing my own WC, for now I just want to do one loop to the CPU, no need to cool that garbage GPU I got.

I'v been trolling this an two other OC forums for more then a week now, but this is the only one I'v posted to or felt to settle in. So I'm looking for pointers, advice ect on what/where to get what I need for my "virgin" WC/OC. So far my only preference is to go with a T to bleed/feed, but I'm not totally clear on how its works and won't act like I do.

Nooob for now
Thanks for ppl time in advance and I'll try to keep any other post shorter.

first, you'll need to expand your budget. in all honesty, a high-end air cooling system will be better than a cheapo watercooling system. maybe a few pc upgrades would be more of a priority?

so if and when you decide to upgrade your budget, you'll need to look at what you're working with. I know for a fact the cm690 can house a MCR240 radiator on the top, but you're not gonig to get decent fans to push air through it, since you'll be using 20mm fans to sandwich in between the case and the top outer shell.

unless you decide to externally mount the radiator, which is a completely different story then.

Your CPU will need a block; i would suggest the Heatkiller LC (if you can afford the LT, then go for it). It's a great block, and it completely replaces your heatsink.

for a radiator, i'd suggest an mcr320 because i know it fits. you're going to have trouble alligning it with the top screw holes, but you only need 4 screws to hold it up anyways. If you choose to go with an external radiator, your radiator will use a radbox and your setup will look similar to this. It will enable you to get much better options for radiators, and even choices of fans.

For your pump, i'd reccomend an MCP355 with an XSPC top; it would be great for the type of setup you're looking to get into.

tubing: i reccomend the Primochill UV-coloured tubing with 7/16 Inner Diameter; i know people say "if you want to save money...." but choosing this tubing can actually save you some headache in the long run because you can just run a clear coolant through it and have any colour without encountering gunk buildup or loss of uv-reactivity. 10ft is more than enough.

coolant: plain old distilled water + PT_Nuke-PHN, which is a biocide.

fans: any fan that is 20mm thick will fit in between the top of your case and the bottom of the "hood" of the cm690.

Thumbs up

Hmm, well looks like my WC project will be getting put off for a month, but I like how the MCR240 was looking. I was thinking maybe for the little CPU I have right now I could go with the slimmer 120mm fans. With the positioning ninjas mentioned. Trying to figure how a mcr320 radiator would fit..

Then when I go for a better proccesor I could go for this mod I came across looking parts up and postionings today. It was with the same radiator with a hole cut above the top fan position with thicker 120mm fans inside the case pushing the air up through it.

I going to keep looking at other peoples setup in cm690 cases, one thing I was wondering though is the diffrence between the Heatkiller LC & LT. If the LT really is better then the LC I would go for that now.

Like what was said about going with the distilled water and using the Primochill tubing for color, with what I read about problems if dyed coolant leaked... It's good though cause that means I'll be looking at and researching WC for about another month.

you can never do too much research for water-cooling. and there's alot of members here that are willing to help too. I was in the same situation as you, i had a cm690 and wanted to water cool, so i know what position you're in. I ultimately ended up buying a Cosmos S and now i have 2 loops with 2 360 radiators in it. i'm considering replacing one of my rads with a Feser Monsta... hmmm...

anyways, the 20mm fans i was talking about: http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g36/...ans-Page1.html

the medium speed one should do, though i can't guarantee the best static pressure results. as for a triple radiator up top, it will be relatively difficult because you'll have to mod quite a bit of stuff, like the interface panel. though it's been done before.

I actually made a thread about it a while back, this may help you: link. I called out for ericeod's help and that's what he did. He managed to use 25mm fans, but if you look close enough the mesh is bent on the top. 20mm fans will avoid the bent mesh but won't warrant the best temps.

hope that helps!
