i'm thinking this would work very well, but doens't your normal waterblock have sort of the same thing going on inside the waterchamber at a much lower scale, this could work out very well, but since the stock cooler is aluminum you'll probably get temps that are about the same as a conventional waterblock. still much cheaper and hey, you can always say you made it yourself!

Going Broke Overclocking
![]() |
Something Burn taught me... along these lines.
Any thing about 1" (2.54cm) from the heat source is inefficent. That being said, your concept may work well if you have a small enough and efficent HS installed. Could turn out to be a good home brew on the cheep.

Hhhhhmmmm, this is possible. Secure a "cage" made of plexiglass over the CPU area and seal it against the board with a joint sealant. An inlet and oulet barb on it, run non-conductive fluid.......it would be a CPU bath. I won't try it on MY system , but in theory........

![]() Look over on TomsHardware, where someone filled their case with cooking oil, and someone here showed a template for a plastic mask to stick over your CPU, after removing the integrated heat sink, to allow blasting the cooling water right onto the chip, essentialy making your cpu the bottom of your waterblock. Can you imagine the fun at RMA time? ![]()

Something else to consider: All of those fins with water running over them=electrolytic corrosion, or the mechanical action of moving water generating a small electric current that chemically breaks down most metals used in heat transfer. Today`s water blocks and phase change systems have researched your idea and tried it, and have come up with much better and efficient parts. But, nice try anyway.

It has been done and for the most part abandoned, aluminum heatsinks do not make good waterblocks. That being said, it is fun to experiment so go ahead it will work, just make sure it is as watertight as a frogs butt.
