Default 2 quick Q's for waterchilling

Hi guys

I wondered if someone could tell me this:

1. Best fluid for a waterchiller?, at what temps?

2. Best pump/pumps for a waterchiller?

3. Any reason to prefer WC over regular phasechange?

Thanks
Skipper

Best liquid is a solution of anti-freeze, can be bought from an auto store. There is no reason for building a chiller as apposed to a direct die cooling rig except that you might not want to pull apart a working AC unit. The Direct Die rig will be the better option for the maximum cooling power but still a chiller can have some very good results if working correctly. The chiller is also going to be a bigger overall unit. Pumps will vary massively but you will need something that can handle the very cold climate if it is submergered or not. The amount of pushing power the pump has (head) will also determine how far away you could have the chiller rig set-up. With everything sorted and running very well there is no reason why you couldn't have the chiller a little distance from the computer being cooled. Obviously the further away it is the more heat will get into the pipes but with some good insulation it would be quite feasible to even have the chiller unit in another room or even outside to keep noise to a minimum. Lots of variations are possible.

Thanks tuchan

Can antifreeze go that low? I thourgh -30 was somewhat the lowest, before other fluids were necessary.

In my mind there are other advantages to a WC unit.

1. With good insulation, you don,t have to wait for a cool down period before starting the machine. That's important to me, since the wife also uses it.

2. The DD method dosn't allow for cooling of the GPU and Chipset, well not that I have ever heard of anyway.

3. You can even create a little cold air in the case, to cool down HD's etc if needed.

Also, maby the costs of some of the DD parts, like the Die and that flexible wand, might be a lot more than building a WC unit out of an old freezer. Or?

you could probably use MCT-40 you can get it from dangerden and it's good for -40, and is non-corrosive, anti-algi, and non-conductive

Pure Alcohol freezes in the -90c area so that's probably your best bet. Then add about 10% of the anti-everything.
