Default My bout with W/C - Round2

Back in October, I ordered one of the Gigabyte 3D Galaxy Kits, and consequently the reservoir/pump cracked after only running for 2 weeks and leaked all over the bottom of my case. I scraped that system regardless how well it performed and the convience with my case and just installed a heatsink + fan. The only problem the temperture of the motherboard is getting extremely hot from the air often times hitting 45C, whereas it was never higher than 34C when I was using the water cooling.

Well, i've finally got some extra money try try a more successful attempt this time and am going to go custom. I figure since I planned on mounting the reservoir outside the case, I might as well mount the rest the stuff outside in a box too and that will make the possibilty of a leak inside the case very very remote. I'm not worried too much about performance on the blocks, I just want the highest quality components which is why i'm going with the TDX because the Apogee has plastic barbs.

I'm pretty much decided on everything but a reservoir, any suggestions?my-bout-w-c-round2-wcplan.jpg

from what i understand the rad should go before the res and pump, but not sure a guy should comment here soon to clear that up... also as far as a res goes... i dont think it matters to much, i mean you can even make one.

This is the correct loop and I like to have everything external as well, less chance for disaster. You can make your own reservoir out of most anything.

go w/ a swiftech micro res. it would be easy to mount in your external box. but since size won't matter much you could always do somthing larger like fstfrddy

Wow, I like that Swifttech reservoir because of the way the screws mount on the side like that, that is perfect. I'll going to go with that, or I'll try making my own reservoir, do you just use epoxy to seal around where you insert the barbs? I don't know how much size plays a factor in the time it takes the liquid to rise in temperature. If it does play a significant role, I wonder if anyone has ever considered one of these culligan water jugs.

It depends on the material you use. If it is thick enough you can drill and tap for the barbs, I'll dig up a couple of pics to show you. don't use epoxy, if you use anything like that get some RTV silicone it is rated for automotive use on cooling systems.

When running a loop it can be very important as to getting it all in the correct order. Especialy when running a TEC for cooling as a peltier creates a hell of a lot of heat. A general rule of thumb is having your rad at the last position before the cpu.

the more water you have the longer it will take to heat up... but it will probably still get to about the same temp. if you leave your system on long enough

I guess the last thing for me to decide, do I build my box out of wood, or do I use Plexiglass. I'm thinking the plexiglass looks cool but i'd probably have to install a couple extra fans for ventilation.

I found a simple guide to construct something like that here. http://www.tux.org/~bball/pcmods/
