Default need critiquing on a website project

basically I am working for this guy(for dirt cheap), but regardless I would like to give him a good website interface. The site is a lawyer lookup and I basically suck at making a nice layout so I was just going to see what you guys thought of the layout I made.

I know it isn't very good, but it has to be simple, needs a white background and all the text was supplied by the guy who commissioned me(commissioner?).

Basically I just want suggestions/constructive criticism.

its simple, to the point and gets the job done. I like it. (I am not one for prettiness, more utility)

looks decent but needs work. typically the stuff you have posted at the bottom like your mission statement, info about the site and contact info goes on a separate "about us" page. it seems like you're just trying to fill up space on the homepage. there's no need for that, it's distracting. all you need is this:

text entry field for zip
drop-down <select> type list for lawyer types
search button

Keep It Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.). just look at google. the easier it is to use and the fewer distractions there are, the more inviting it is to a new user. just make sure everything is sewed together well at the seams and keep the user in mind when building an interface.

would you want to see that stuff if you were looking for a lawyer? i don't need to know why i should use this site... that's rather pointless because i'm already lookin' at it. i don't really need directions on how to use a search engine either. most of this text can be omitted and the rest belongs somewhere else.

It's not bad, but too many options. Should group similar things.

I would try and condense some of the options.

Nothing is more daunting to a new user than a whole matrix full of radio buttons to click.

the thing is, the guy wants to be able to roll over an option, and a layer pops up with a little description. I want to do a drop down menu, but it's up to him...

and also I'll try dropping the stuff at the bottom, or at least graying it out

This is still good. Simple and straight forward. For this guy, I do not think it has to be too shabby or superb as it is for something professional, right?

nice, simple layout, but i think if you have that many options, radio buttons are not the right tool... see how a scrollable men looks?

Are you using flash? there's a lot of opportunities for dynamic movement in a site like that... one option pulls you to the left, one pulls you to the right, etc. Remember, just because its professional, doesn't mean it can't be interesting. The more intrigued the user is, the more likely they are to stay. (And that's why design is design, you're putting unique flavor into something that's probably been done before.. enjoy it!
