web site for a store owner
So my girl friends dad owns a sign shop, they make and sell trophies, vinyl stickers, plaques, awards, signs, embroidery and probably some other things. He currently has a website but it is very basic and would like something a little more complex. i'm not too familiar with web coding or know what software would be needed. what kind of stuff is used for basic shop online sites?
i would like to be able to post examples of his work, maybe a page for each different style of item available (trophy, sign, vinyl, etc) have fillable order forms for online orders contact information attractive and professional what would be needed for this?

sounds like you could get by with just a straight html site if you would like to. But for added functionality and expandability, I would recommend a dynamic language such as php, asp.net (my favorite), rails, coldfusion, etc. Also, it is most likely you will want some sort of SQL backend.
Where you go from there really depends on what sort of language/backend you have chosen. I prefer to work in asp.net/MSSQL, but that will differ with developers.

well i know html, i've done a little SQL but not enough to start something like the on my own.

i'd love to learn, but at this point i don't even know enough to start.
after purchasing a domain and hosting space, i don't really know where to go after that. like how to include sql into a website. the only sql i've done has been very very basic.

well i'm undecided yet so i'm still open to suggestions. i guess i really need to sit down and figure out what i want to accomplish first, and from there figure out how to do it.
