Default How much to charge for website creation?

I am going to be making a pretty basic website for some people I know that just opened up a little store. I don't know exactly what they want yet, but I doubt they need fancy server side stuff done. However, I will have to keep up with site maintenance. What is a good price range to charge for such a site? Thanks!

Wow. So I guess I might charge them $200 and $25\month to keep it updated. Since I know these people personally.

I had a thread on here somewhere about this topic. Most people said around $300 + $30 a month. I think its a fair price. If it people you know, knock off some from the origirinal price, maybe $200, but keep the monthly price the same. Its a pain in the ... to maintain a site (in terms of hourly wage).

Ok so I am thinking maybe $200 for initial charge and $10-15 a week when I need to update it. I say only this much because I doubt I will be doing a lot of updates.

Ok so now... What about basic SEO services? I am taking a 12 week course on SEO and already knew a little bit. They are a local shop, so I would like to submit them to multiple local directories, maybe set them up with a Squidoo page, etc... How much to charge for basic SEO services?

I highly advise not to charge per week.

If there is one thing I have found in development is that people don't realize how much they want up front. Usually "it's just a small site, few updates," next thing you know, you are writing Stored procedures to look through their records, keep inventory and so on.

I am not saying this in a way that is bad, in fact I love doing things like that. But I have learned from my mistakes. And charging this way ends up screwing you over.

Think about it, it is a store website. Likely when they see what you can do, they are going to ask for more, and then some more. Maybe an inventory system, maybe online ordering. I would say 80% of the time, my customers add on to their original requests, and most of the time the original request ends up being less than half of the end product.

Do yourself a favor and charge hourly or price out features. Otherwise you are going to end up paying for your mistake with your hard work and underpaid time. Web coding is a skill, don't get undercut for it.

(I say minimum of $25/hour, and that is for html/css/js only)

Please don't give me the opportunity to say 'I told you so' in a few months

$25/hour sounds about right. I myself charge $30/hour for web design/creation/implementation, but not just for html/css/js, also php and etc.

I completely agree with Stupid on this one. Take his advice. You will be screwed if you let these people get a block of your time at a fixed cost ($300 down) because they will naturally want more and more, being an ecommerce business.

what type of business, and where is it located?

Any questions, feel free to PM me. advice is free
