Looking to set up an online Java Chat site for no more than 100 users tops...probably more in the 5-35 range. It's intended use is for student communication during classes.
I don't want to use G-Chat or any form of chat that will require a person to have an account. I want to let word of mouth run get the site around, and have people put in a user name as they go. So here's two issues... I want it done cheap I want it done fast Plans at this moment are to find a free web hosting site with a minimal URL. I'm not overly concerned about ads...there won't be any info on the page, just a Java chat box. So what I'm looking to get from everyone is recommendations for a free web hosting site with a short URL (not something with 15 different backslashes in it) and a good way of setting up the Java chat. Alternatively any recommendations for web forwarding would work as well. I've been out of the web scene for about 8 years since junior high/freshman year of high school, so I'm not too familiar with terms, but there used to be a few sites that you could have an incredibly short URL that would forward to your site. 1. Independent of ISPs/universities/workplaces blocking IRC:
- CGI:IRC and your own IRC server (CGI:IRC will give them all the IP of the server it's running on) - Chat like OCN has 2. Dependent - PJIRC and other Java-based IRC clients

With respect to your sig though, here's the goal. Chat room for students to use while in class that requires no sign up, is easy to navigate to, and as clean looking and ad free as possibly once the first two requirements are met. |

IRC is sort of like ventrilo in the fact that you pc can be the host/server. The difference is you type instead of using talking into a mic.

I looked into the IRC thing and I'm not sure about some of my fellow students being able to use it....some people are pretty computer dense. Is there any way to use IRC and make it as friendly as possible? Ideally just going to a website and having the chat window right there on the website?
If that's possible with IRC, could anyone help me out with it? |

IRC can be very user friendly. The most popular way for users to access a certain channel/network would be through a Java interface, some IRC networks such as Freenode already have these already set up and even provide instructions on how to embed the Java App on your own site if you wish.
