IMO, phpBB is the best of the three, seeing as it's free, has a great community, and has a ton of mods for it.

I personally prefer IPB, solid software, frequent updates, good technical support, easy to use (both on the user and management side), loads of great mods and skins for it, ...

I love IPB, especially since 3.X, afterall its a complete rewrite. and its "done right" up to modern standards in code and such.

I guess my belief is that "creating a new product based on the past/current makes it more difficult in the future" IPB 3.X is more of a current/future product.

Unfortunately it seems Vbulletin is lacking in this area. with VB 4.0 coming it wont be a full rewrite, but a over-time rewrite.. i do not feel this is a good way to go for a few reasons.

And then you have the drama of vbulletin as a company in general... the link sickened me when i originally read it, not sure of its content exactly now (been a while). as id rather put it behind me. do not wish to re-read it.. :x

I chose vBulletin because of the plugin/hook system and I have a lot of experience administrating it. Otherwise, the coding is messy and so is the default design. It also lacks a number of basic features. This may change in vB4 though

I have heard good things about IPB but have yet to really try it out myself. On the user side, it looks pretty.

phpBB is free and that says enough. It is great for small boards and group projects, but from personal experience, things start to get out of control once the user base grows to a significant number.

The perfect board would be one with vBulletin's customizability, IPB's looks and phpBB's free-ness.

I voted for vB, simply because I've used it longer and have more experience with it, not to mention the vast amount of mods available.

But! I am sitting on the fence as far as IPB goes, it looks like quite the rival. If I was opening a new forum I might actually choose IPB over vB, who knows.
