I have some downloads on my site, how would i go about making it so you have to enter in a password to download it? do i need php and sql to do this?

.rar passwords are easily brute forcible by any script kiddie with the interwebs. But to answer your question, yes, you can use <?php ?> and MySQL to setup password protected downloads.

Just password protect the directory. Take a look at this guide, or set it in cpanel.

An htaccess would be the simplest way, but it's not really easy managing users and their permissions.

A database system with PHP would allow for more control of the whole process:
PHP and MySQL Login

If you don't have access to a database, this seems like a good alternative:
PHP and XML Login
