Hey OCN,

my friends and i are in the process of setting up a forum about cars.
http://highoctanestl.49.forumer.com/index.php

i would like to try to put this forum on a domain of our own. how do i go about making that happen.

im sorry if i dont use the correct lingo but im new to making websites and forums.

in short, id like to go to, say, http://highoctanestl.com/ and it load the forum.
any help is much appreciated.

i know that some things will cost money and i am okay with that

If you think rap sucks or isn't "real music", quit being pretentious and go sample something that isn't on the radio:
De La Soul, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Brand Nubian, Canibus, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Gang Starr, Digital Underground, (old) Kanye West, Immortal Technique, etc.

Better yet, try to make a 4 minute spoken word poem read to a beat that doesn't suck or sound corny if you think hip hop has no talent.

You have to purchase the domain (www.whatever.com) and have it hosted by a hosting service like godaddy.com

They will give you the address and administrative tools to work with your site. Then you can put your site up.

I have yet to do this for myself, but it's pretty cheap and pretty straightforward.

I would visit a few hosting sites, get pricing, and talk to their people about the process and go with the one that has the best balance of reputation and how easy you feel the way they do it will work for you.

I think godaddy is one of, if not the most popular.

I've been a customer of nixihost.com for quite some time now, great prices and simply amazing service (for the web space host). I purchase my domains through dyndns.com. I think all in all, it's like $60/year or so? I may be exaggerating that number though, I have it on auto bill so I don't pay much attention.

Yes and Yes. If you go with nixihost, they have an awesome app called Fantastico deluxe. It's really just a 3 click process to install a new forum on your site.

If you want to copy over your current forum, you're going to need to back up you MySQL database and port it into your new host, then setup your forums to use that database during the install (or just copy/paste your current forums files, just don't change the database name and it will be seamless).

Uhh, I don't know of any host that will stop you from having a certain amount of users at any given time. Pick a host -> contact them?

sorry for a double post but it counts for bump too.

http://www.invisionpower.com/hosting/ it says like 25 users online.

im not understanding because it seems the users only would be restricted by bandwidth. not a set number.

if im correct in saying that the users is more dependent on the bandwidth. how does bandwisth compare to 10 users versus 25?

ive been looking around at godaddy which seems to have good webhosting for 14.99 a month its the unlimited plan so i assume it has great bandwidth.

thanks for any help that anyone can give to me

also, i plan to purchase the IP.Board3 either through the hosted communities or just use the self-hosted license if i can get a better hosting site.

so i think i found the PERFECT web hosting site. its justhost.com. and its free for 12 months. it also seems to meet the requirements for IP.Board3.
does this look like a good host?
