Okay so I am by far NOT a web creator dude, my relm is hardware, HOWEVER, being a CIT major the school gives me some space on what they call the W: drive, this drive is part of the server for their website so I get my own little webpage at www.schoolsname.edu/~myusername, now I got about 20GB of space..... why so much idk but anyway I wanna use it!
So this is what I was thinking Ive never done anything more than have a simple website with links, and different pages, and maybe pics and embedded vids,e but for this one I was hoping to maybe do this... Create a small Forum for news and info and such, and create a simple chat room. Along with maybe a simple home page that has some new articles or things of interest on there..... Now I would want to be able to control who had access to this, basically I want people to have to create a username n junk, (or even send a request for a username and have me manually input their stuff to create it for them) I want pretty good control over this site because lets say its for a club that most of the school would prolly laugh at and torment and just spam the heck out of the site.... Is this possible? and if so how would I go about doing it.... oh note* I dont know if i can install anything on this space... I think I may just be limited to dragging and dropping files into the drive...... Major thanks and reps if you can help

You will need support for things liky MYSQL and PHP.
This is all handled server side, the server will need to support those features. I don't think you'll need to write the page yourself. More like get an existing forum framework and set it up to your specs. Coding it all yourself would be a big project.

Here is an example of open source, freeware forum software:
http://vanillaforums.org/ I have no experience with this though, so its up to you to sort through the various flavors of forum software to determine what works best for you. You will have to consult the server admin to see if they have MYSQL and PHP support. If it is a full fledged web server, it likely does.

I really seriously doubt you'll be able to do that, most likely it's just space like at my colleges.
I don't think you can get a MySQL or forum or ANYTHING running there for real.

Depends.
My college webspace had both. Although if it is just school webspace, I highly doubt they will allow you to run a forum. You can purchase your own space and domain on the cheap.

No, that doesn't support server-side either. All you can do with that is static HTML pages. You'd either need to buy hosting, or you'd need to set up your own server on your internet connection.

Question, do you need MySQL and all that junk to run a simple chatroom?
