Default Hardware Change Activation?

Something really weird just happened.

I was in the middle of having a nice game of CSS deathmatch, when my PC BSOD'ed.

I rebooted to find a message:

Your hardware has changed significantly recently, meaning you must activate your Windows product again within 3 days. Would you like to reactivate now?

I thought it was some kind of Virus trick, so, obviously, I clicked No.

Then when I fully booted, I got that Activation message, just the same as you do from a fresh installation. 3 Days left to activate.

Has anybody else had this message?

That's normal for XP if it senses a major change like a new CPU or mainboard I think.

By the way...if you ran out of re-activations...I've found that it's pretty easy to clal them up and reactivate over the phone as many times as you want. Messing around with hardware so much, I've gone way past the 5 free activations. I think there are 5 or 3 something like that.

Yeah, LOL.

I can hardly understand the people on the other end of the phone, but that's what I've had to keep doing also.

I installed my exact same copy on my Girlfriend's PC and it didn't need ringing up at all, activated straight away - but I formatted mine a day after and it needed one, not the first time either. Dunno. Maybe it stores it in the hidden data cylinders on your HDD?

Not gonna bother reactivating just now, building my new rig ( in my System Specs blow ) tomorrow!

Thanks for your help anyway +REP.

I have got it a few times, so dont think you should be worried about it other than a long call. also, i dont think reactivations really have a limit, i know that because someone has reactivated his quite a few times due to frequent hardware changes to his pc.

EDIT : just realised it doesnt matter, soz , a bit late, oh well. gud luck with the new build .

reactivation, or activation in general over the phone allwasy works
just say its a reactivation due to a hardware change, even if its a new installation
the genuine advantage even says its a good copy

Now..Microsoft is going to try and trick you with a deep and complex question: Sir/Maam are you currently running more than one copy of this purchased version of Windows?

Now...I know it's crippling to have to answer such a clever question...just take deep breaths and say the right thing.

Easy peasy....stupid Microsoft.
