Push and hold your power button in for 5 seconds. That should turn it off.

Yeah having to hard shut down your computer every time is hard on your hardrive. You could have a faulty windows install i say reformat and reinstall and once you reboot into windos for the first time shut down the computer to see if its the copy of windows or your harddrive or other hardware issue

OK, first. In Shutdown you mean when you select shutdown from the menu it just goes to the point where it say's it's safe not turn off the PC?
If this is the case the problem is more than likely the APM Settings were not set in the BIOS prior to installing windows so it doesn't think the board has the ability. In example, I had the same issue on a new board. Didn't set the APM settings which handles the actual power off circuit on the board and when XP was installed it never saw them and acted as I've stated above. Unfortunately there is no way to re-enable them (Yay Microsoft!) to get them but to re-install I believe. Make sure BIOS is setup how you wish and then install. If not, need more info ![]() Edit: Sorry.. APM instead of APC (the battery backup -- Been a looooong day

i remember a friend of mine had a similar problem to this since his motherboard was too old. everytime he tried to do so (via start, shutdown etc.) he would get a message saying "it is now safe to turn off ur comp" and so he had to press the power button to finish shutting down the comp.
to fix this i remember going to device manager, clicking on "view", "show hidden devices" and then looking for a unistalled or disabled device (indicated by a red cross) called something like "...atapi/atm/acpi... legacy device" then enabling/installing it

Open up Task Manager, tab Processes, kill every svchost.exe you can see. It'll shutdown your computer and the next time you shut down your computer it should work properly.

Another thing to check would be the event log. Often it will say application hang and tell you which one it was.
