Default What opinion on Windows Vista?

A guy I work with has a friend who is the MSCI or whatever and gets the beta copys of wind. vista. He let me either have it or borrow it and he installed it on a computer here at work to test it out. From what i can tell, fom the little time that i have played with it, it is basically just windows xp, but with just more useless themes that just take up ram. Yea it looks nice, but is it really worth especially since it appears that windows just stole things from mac osx and stuff. THe funny part to me is though, after it boots up, it is already taking up like 600mb of ram, and that only with 36 processes going, which windows task manager only shows the processes that the user is running, not the system ones. Maybe it is just me on this, well i am sure there are other people as well, but vista would just be a waste of time and money to buy. I didn't see or mess with anything on there that really impressed me to make me want to get it. To me, and i am not slow when it comes to computers, but it is just more confusing then xp. I know people who have enough trouble doing things with xp, and vista just makes it worse. One thing that was alittle different though, was when you right click on the desktop and click properties to mess with the theme or desktop or resolution and stuff, to me they made that more confusing and harder. I think windows messed up with this one, they are to concerned with the visual style of vista, how it looks and what not, then how it performs. Like i said before it windows xp just with you coudl say eye candy to make it look nicer, which only uses up more resources of the computer.
Oh and it is running on a dell optiplex 520,small form factor, which has P4 HT 3.0ghz, with 1gb of ddr2 ram, and a sata 80gb hard drive. And there where times when it looked like it was struggling to do things.
Sorry if there is another thread about windows vista and whatnot.

Well to begin with, this is strictly a beta, there really doesn't seem to be much in the beta from what i saw, but reading some articles it seems like the real version is going to have allot more then the beta does!

Check this out. I know it is written by Microsoft so it might be a biased opinion, but it seems like it does have a few features that arent just for show. Remember how much the search thing on Windows XP sucked? Well the one on Windows Vista is completely different, it will work similar to an online search engine and have a bit broader search words then just the exact name, but its not going to bring up a ton of junk that has nothing to do with what your searching for.

What i find pretty cool, when you scroll your mouse over a minimized window it brings up a little display with an example of the window in it! Of course not the best feature, but it is still pretty cool. Also, you are almost going to be forced to use Windows Vista, because XP is not going to support Direct X 10 cards .

The "Slowness" issue is also supposed to be because it is a beta. Although with Vista 1 gig of ram will be recommended still, if you have that one gig it will be much more responsive than XP. Its some sort of technology called "Super Fetch".

Anyway, hope that helped a bit, check out the link i provided, it does have some good info.

dont want vista probobly never will i just want dx10 support for windows xp. The only reason ms are brining dx10 out on vista is so the can get more people to buy it to use their dx10 cards. If i get a dx10 card in the future then yes i may be forced to get it but i would prefer to keep xp. Also has anyone else found that vista is quite of user friendly but its really hard to get to th more complicated stuff eg control panel.

from what i messed with from teh beta 2, it i more differicult to get to the simpler things. Like changing the resolution of your screen, opening device manager, or even getting to the properties of like your video card and all that. It is still user friendly, but they have changed some thing completely, so it takes awhile to find where certain things are. I think mainly buisnesses are really going to buy vista, but they may not who knows, because of the learning curve of it, which could cause problems.

Vista Beta ran very well for me, I loved the look, and I actually got most programs to work on it (ie. CPUz) as long as I told Vista to run the program as administrator, it has a feature to run programs compatiable with XP, however I did not try any games (I wasnt a gamer back then...lol, 2 months ago)

still don't think it is worth the price tag, nor the price it would cost to have a computer anbd hardware that could run vista at its best.
