Default Really wierd booting issue

Hi Guys

Got a prob here

Ive got a client who up until a couple days ago was having a booting issue. What was happening was at random times during the boot up process, the computer monitor would go blank and everything would lock up.

We ended up replacing the hard drive and installing a fresh copy of Windows XP Home Edition. Then i put good security on it and let it go, the next morning it is doing the exact same thing.

What does a person do in that situation? Ive suggested a new computer because he has a AMD Duron Processor 900MHz.

The only thing I can think of that it might be a power issue or a computer part dying slowly, but without any proper testing tools, It is really hard to diagnose.

Any Idea's

I would say a power issue, or a part dying like you said. Otherwise it could be that XP is such a load on that computer that it just kills over. Try installing 98 on it. If that doesn't work, then I would say "GET A NEW FREAKIN PUTER!!"

lol

Good luck!

A power issue or a memory issue.

I would probably go more with the power issue, because bootups and shutdowns tend to put more of a strain on the PSU than other times.

If you are able to run Prime95 on the comp, try running the "In-Place Large FFTs" torture test. This has a large power consumption.

If his expectations are that low, offer him a built system and stick an Athlon XP 2000+ in or something

But yeah, the problem is probably the power.

well on the old hard drive it was running 98, but when we put the new hard drive in, we loaded xp

i thought it might of been power but i suggested to him why waste money fixing it when it could go towards a new one.

if you guys offer me prime 95, how do i diagnose it if it does play up, once in windows it seems to be ok, but you have to restart 10-15 times just to get in there

It can actually be 3 things

1. Bad PSU giving up on him
2. Bad Ram
3. Bios could do with a reflash.

I would UPdate his BIOS if possible then if you still get issues then Memtest the RAM.

OK....this is rediculous. Why waste your time trying to keep a computer like that alive. I have seen people giving away computers better than that. Infact you can pick them up at the dump for free!

Please save us an yourself the trouble and build him a new one.

If I can run XP with no problem on my pz 266 lappy, he can run it on a 900. However, I had a Duron for a while that I was going to use for LAN games, and it didn't seem to like XP. It took me 3 days to install one half of windows on it (1.0 Ghz, 128MB RAM) so I finally gave up.
