Unhappy Computer is acting really funny. help plz!!

Ok, my girlfriends computer has been acting really funny. I noticed that the light on the front of the pc to indicate power to the system no longer works. Also the computer has a 512mb ddr ram stick installed but the system is only displaying 384mb of ram The pc is basically so slow that its hard to use. 32 running processes, none that shouldnt be there. The weird thing is that when the computer is really slow i have been looking in task manager to see what is using up the memory. Nothing is, normally it's under 15% usage. The only thing i can think of is maybe a mobo problem. Hense the fact that the light on the front of the case no longer works. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

p.s. i checked the computer for spyware and virus's also. I think its definetely a hardware issue.

Thanks

Have you run disk cleanup and maybe CCleaner then a defragment?

What exactly is slow? If it's seek times or open times that could be the problem. If it isn't, it will help anyway.

Oh, and it isn't Windows 98, is it?

No its not windows 98, It's windows Xp HE.
Everything is slow.

**Another weird thing that took me a while to figure out is that the pc will not boot up if the cd drive is hooked up. ??

OK. It was faster at one point, correct?

Is it a custom system? If it is, you should flash the BIOS to the latest version and reconfigure everything in it to make sure there isn't something wrong in there.
