Will i be able to run XP games and other software on windows vista, im thinking of upgrading, but this would be utterly pointless to me if i cant because i use my pc for nothing more

first try a dual boot to see if it will support your hardware, and play the game you want. Resize your partition with attached program, just burn to CD and boot from. then resize it (takes a while) and then install Vista on the second partition, and it'll dual boot with a menu to choose which to boot from.

EDIT: almost 90% of programs that work in XP work in Vista (save most Anti virus, or video editors, use AVG 7.5)
