You didn't change any of the boot config settings or happen to mess with jumper or master/slave settings?

Try a system reformat. It'll delete anything diong that.

Better yet do an Ad-Aware scan and a virus scan, Defrag and you know the usual system tool thing. Take some time and do it, might see a difference.

What boot time is increased? POST to WinXP loading, WinXP loading, or both?

Try it with no dvd/cd drives plugged in. It may be the cause of a dodgy drive

thanks for your help, but really i think i tried everything. I JUST REINSTALLED XP TWO DAYS AGO SO I AM NOT REFORMATTING AGAIN AS I HAVE TONS OF STUFF TO DO WITH A LOT OF PROGRAMS.....(this is a new build) and it was lightning fast. the ONLY thing i installed was OpenOffice, and i DELETED that from startup folder made no speck of a difference. i dont htink its a drive, i have had it running like this. no hardware changes.

and the lag is not posting, it is at windows xp screen with the blue bar.

It'll increase naturally with Service Packs ( I assume you've installed those since you just did the build). Other than that? I dunno.

Its possibly due to a network connection that is timing out. You need to find the offending network connection and reconnect/reconfigure it correctly, or disable the networking device.
