Default Ages computers?

I was told once... back in the Windows '95 days, that turn a computer on and off ages the computer quicker than leaving it on all the time. This also goes for using sleep or hibernate. I was just wondering what you guys have to say about this, because I use sleep on my computer all the time. Does sleep have any negative effects, and what is was told.. is that true?

From what i understand, that mainly has to do with the stress put on the power supply of turning it on and off a lot. Right now, most good power supplies don't have the problems associated with turning them on and off a lot. I know a lot of people here never turn their computers off (folding, etc.) so that's not a probelm for them. And sleep shouldn't have any negative impact on your computer at all.

Anyone that wants to correct me, go ahead. This is only from the little knowledge i have. And considering if it's only the PSU that fails, you would just be able to go buy a new one. You don't have to throw away the whole computer.

But i would also like to know if the constant sending of startup voltages and making components go hot and cold has any negative effects as opposed to using them all the time.

I leave my computer on all the time with the proc at 100% load. If it breaks it gives me an excuse to buy a new one

chips and psus are being built much much better now days. I heard that cpus can last around 10 years.

A psu will probably be the thing that can age from stress though I am not very knowledgeable on this subject.

the computer going on and off is a little hard on the hard drives. . . its like stop and go traffic for cars. I shut mine off because im not worried about shortening the 5 yr lifetime as ill probably replace everything every 3 yrs or so. . . If your concerned then i would just leave it on . .or better yet fold with it on

i think turning off and on puts more wear n tear on the system parts and stuff, but I DON'T WANT TO PAY A HIGHER ELECTRIC BILL I'M CHEAP! and besides it's not like your going to use a computer for 5 or more years when technology is always changing

That may be how it is in the entusiast community, but I know a friend that has a 2000 cheapo dell (it was cheap when his family bought it). I think this isn't as much of a concern for us because we replace our parts at least every year.
