Default new cpu messes xp up?

I just got an opty 165 to upgrade from my A64 3200. The first time i tried booting it, it got to windows, but after it installed the drivers for te new cpu, the screen turned black. Next time i got a couple of messages that the registry was repaired. Then all was well, until the screen turned black after a couple of minutes. The third time I tried, it brought me to the screen where io chooses which OS to run, and there were 2 options: "Windows XP Professional", and "Windows (default)", but both led to a screen that said some file was missing and xp couldn't load.

So i'm wondering *** happened?

Also, i got a thinkpad, and it has 3 mouse buttons. The middle one allows you to scroll with the trackpoint, but that doesn't work in firefox, just windows explorer. Any suggestions on that?

I just reinstalled. It is fine now. It said that it would delete all my user files, but they are still in the docs/settings folder. Now the PITA process of reinstalling all of my programs. Once a year is still too often.

I'm still wondering if Windows can't accept a different CPU without taking certain precaustions.
