I am currently running Windows XP Pro SP2, and I have been tinkering around with services and startup items. I am currently down to about 18 processes when Windows starts. Unfortunately, when I try to defragment my computer, I get an error message stating..
__________________'Diskeeper failed to connect to the service. The service may have stopped. See the Windows event log for more details.' Does anyone have any idea which service I need to enable to fix this problem? I've been trying to figure it out but haven't had much luck.

Diskeeper is a third party application, and it is tied in with the MMC service

I cannot seem to locate that service. I checked in both Control Panel-->Admin Tool-->services as well as in msconfig. Am I not looking in the correct place?

To open MMC, click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type mmc.

There is also a service called Diskeeper that should probably be running. If you check the log, maybe it tells you which specific service is needed.

Hmm,
How about re-enabling all the stock (mostly unecessary!) Services, (except for Messenger and the other Obvious ones - heck, do all of them), and then trying (after a restart). See if it defrags then, and just disable them one at a time.. till you find the bugger thats needed ^_^. I know the darn service thats needed, but for the life of me I cant remember it! Its a service that makes the program connect to the 'local host' as if it were on a network (127.0.0.1 in a stand alone PC situation of course) I'll have to take a look at them again. When I'm lightin lightening up my system though, I usually opt for "manual" luanching, as opposed to Disabling it completly though, just in the even that some program I install in the future needs one. (some of them crash without :\) as for defraggin - Perfect Disk forever my friend ![]() -----EDIt------ ah, check if the logical disk manager service is on manual.
