Before any of you say, I did check for virii/spyware and had done TONS of defragments.
I'm only running Avast, ZA, Spybot, and sometimes uTorrent. I don't know how to tell how much RAM I'm using (so damn confusing) so I can't tell you idle usage. My problem lies here: I'm sitting at idle for about 2-3 hours and I come back. When I do... FF, IE, or anything really, take an unusual amount of time to load. At first, I thought soyware/virii... nope. Next, defragment... Win default defragmenter doesn't work anymore , so I d/l'd O&O (AWESOME program I got it all defragmented and all's good, right? So I thought. Windows takes about the same time to boot up, odd. I log in and that takes longer, weirder. All of my apps take usually more than 6 secs (minimum ) to load, weirdest. So what I ask is what could be the cause of this? I really would hate to reformat the drive, because both drives are at minimum 15% free space left. I make sure I have that much free, so much not to burden the drive anymore. My DVD burner is in the RMA process (DOA, maybe I got a drive from a bad batch). I hate using more CDs when I can use less DVDs (I'm a cheap bastard). I have told my dad about the possibility of an external drive... but I guess I'm on my own for that one. Just a thought, could my crap mobo be the casue of this? Seeing as I'm using a SATA port and both IDE ports, on a VIA chipset. Thanks

What is your CPU usage and Ram usage? Are any of your processes hogging ram memery? I would run scan disk and see what happens.

the joys of windows...
Seriously every time I find my machine starts lagging up, low level reformat, and shes back up to speed. I also suggest that if you do reformat, go with a lighter version of your OS. xplite(for 2003 &xp), nlite (for 2000/me), vlite ( for vista), 98 lite (for 98). These allow you to cut out allot of the overhead that Windows installs. therefor allowing less problematic issues later on. just google them to find them.

Some tricks that may help keep your HD less fragmented is to set the paging file to a constant value instead of a range (I have it set to 3000MB). First you set it to no paging file, restart and then set it to 2000, 3000 or whatever you want. You could also try out Tuneup Utilities 2007 which can help you streamline your boot time and OO Defrag which is a far better defragmenter software than Windows. Both of these have free trial versions.

It's the 1 gb of ram. I recently went over to a friend's house, popped in my ram and the difference was noticeable. After ALt+F4 in games and apps, desktop no longer took time to load. It appears almost instantly.

Well... I went from the Titanic in the middle of Stormy Atlantic to speedy car doing 60mph on land. That's an improvement.
@panzer... My system was much faster than it is now. I just don't understand how it went from booting Firefox almost instantaneously to it taking around 3 secs to boot it.
