Turing Test is Overrated

My overclock is 24hr Orthos, MemTest, and ATITool stable under XP. I installed Vista Prem x64 and now MemTest fails on me after 5min - 4hrs. I get an error from Vista that says the app failed and will be closed. I tried running Orthos in XP mode and still fail. So... what happened? I don't understand why an OS would cause an error in such a simplistic app. The hardware should be fine at my overclocks.

I have problems w/ my P4 630 when it is clocked above 3.6ghz in x64. Same issues as yours..failing stress tests it easily passes at 3.9ghz in the x86 OS. I dont know why for the life of me...must have something to do with the 64bit coding...more data really just means more potential for errors!

So it is a 32 vs 64 issue... not a XP vs Vista issue?

As far as i know yes. I ran the beta x86 Vista last year on that cpu just fine...64Vista, would not install at all, so x64 is the only 64bit OS I use. My e6700 has the same problems as well..over 3.7ghz in x64 = failed SuperPi 32M and failed Prime95. In XP, my e6700 has hit 4ghz before the instability started choking back my clock speeds.
...wierd. I am real curious to see how the new AMD Q4's will handle a "real 64bit OS"

The x64 os uses the memory bandwith more and utilizes ram differently than x32 system. Could be putting a bit more stress on it???

understood...but these errors are CPU related..not RAM, least mine are. Maybe the NB is @ fault..?

I have a AMD processor so the memory controller is on the CPU. In my case, it wouldn't be the NB. Dang, I don't want to downclock!

I mean, memory errors and cpu errors...? It doesnt make any good sense. My RAM was failing test @ 850mhz on 4-5-4-15-5...it runs perfect at 920mhz, 4-4-4-14-4. As for the cpu, we both have established we can clock much higher than "allowed" too. To me, that points at something else being the cause of the issue. If a 'NB' or 'MC' were getting errors through it, it would corrupt both the RAM data and the CPU data...

Solved the issue. I really like Vista's more accesible event logging and performance reporting. Orthos was failing due to PartitionMagic trying to run periodically. PM doesn't work on Vista... yet.
