Default from vista to windows xp

my friend bought a computer preinstalled with vista and he wants to install windows xp on it since vista is uncommpatible with alot of the stuff he does i tryed to to install windows xp but since vista uses a different file system than XP so when i put in the windows xp installation cd it says unknown partition and if i click something then a BSOD appears

so i was thinking of running a live linux cd a another program off a cd to format the drive to NFTS format so i can install windows on it.

what should i use

1st: This is Windows Vista that doesn't have a boot into DOS mode.
2nd: It is a laptop with Vista which means that there is a 99.9% chance of not having a floppy drive.

In that case they would have to figure out how to get DOS on a CD.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't need to recognize it. Delete the partitions on the drive and create a new one.
