Depends on how much RAM he has, but a common conception is to have 1.5x of the amount of RAM you have. So, if you have 1 GB of RAM, you should set your pagefile to 1.5GB

if you have a really low amount of ram when windows is installed it will make up for it. usually the page is about what he said. how much ram does he have? and does he game, those are the 2 things you will need to know

Page File, as you may know, acts as RAM but on a harddrive. Thus it is very SLOW RAM. Following this 1.5x rule, the more RAM you have, the more page file you will have. But, XP was never designed to use more than 2 or 3 GB of RAM, and so the page file is limited to 2096 ( I believe ) so that hard disk space does not get wasted, and if you have loads of RAM, it will make sure that all the memory gets stored on the RAM rather than on the page file

Page file won't make the computer faster. It will probably make it slower in most cases. It just allow you to have more running applications at once.

How much RAM does he have? If he has one gig page file will hardly do anything.

ya if there is severely low amount of ram pagefile wont help much as well if hes got enough.

The only reason to change a pagefile to a larger size is if your "virtual memory is running low". In which case the best solution is to buy more ram but if you are in a jam changing the pagefile size will temporarily solve your problem, albeit very slow. Setting your page file to a large size will keep windows from have to resize the pagefile thus clearing and preparing space causing even more slow downs. Thats the real slow down problem when it comes to page files. You should set your page file to a large enough size so that windows never resizes it and set it to not do so. This will also help in reducing pagefile fragmentation which segways me into my next point. Most dont realize as well that (according to my experience with hundreds of home computers) their slow ass computers are mainly due to the fact they NEVER DEFRAGMENT. Thanks to vista (for those of you that have it) this has become a default setting to schedule a defragmentation every wednesday late at night. But the computer has to be on and cannot be in hibernate mode or standby. Besides laptop users... who uses that anyway?
