Default Home Theater PC - What's the Best OS?

I'm on the verge of building a HTPC to go along with a 720p projector I'm buying. The build will include a 35W Athlon 64 3500+, an Asus Micro ATX motherboard with an integrated nvidia 6150 graphics chip, 2 x 512gb of DDR2 800, an X-Fi Xtreme Gamer, a good deal of hdd storage, dvd burner 450w psu among a few other things.

My question is what is the best OS for this kind of HTPC? I want to be able to watch .avi files as well as dvd's along with my music collection. On Newegg I can get Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 for $109 or Vista Home Premium for $111 which seemed to have a pretty good GUI for media viewing (from videos I've seen online). Which one has a better setup and a better GUI.

http://www.mythtv.org/

Good place to start. Also there are Linux distros with Myth preinstalled.

Wiki and distros

Lists of support can be found on the main site but AVI support should be standard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_theater_PC

This gives more listings of options, and I think most are remote compliant but check which remotes the OS will prefer. If your going to do it from your macbook though, you may want to put it on a wired network within your home. Thats as much as I know. As far as GUI goes, you could browse around for screenshots but I have not used them myself. I hope to with time myself.
