Default How to: Change your hard drive icons in Windows

This works for Windows XP x32 and Vista X64 (also possibly XP 64-bit and Vista 32-bit)

IMPORTANT: Always back up your registry before making registry changes!!

(Hit "windows key+r", type "regedit", click on "file" and select "export". Alternatively you go "start menu>>run>>regedit>>file>>export" select your filename, save it where you want and import it by using the same procedure if you encounter any problems.)

Now lets start changing those icons. There are more than one way to go about this, but the one that worked best for me is this. Look at the attached image for the results

What you do is making a new .txt file (not in Wordpad because that doesn't work) use notepad. And you copy+paste whats in the code tags below into the file, make the necessary letter changes to match your computer and save it as a *.reg file. Dont forget.

When saved (I saved it to my windows root ("C:\") folder and I recommend you do the same) either double click or right click+merge and click yes at the "insert information into the registry" prompt.

IMPORTANT NOTE: be sure to use two slashes ("\") instead of one as usual in the paths like this "\\"

Back up the file for later use. Happy icon modding
Code:

I get an error: Cannot import C:\WINDOWS\DriveIcons.reg: the specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

Any idea how to import it using regedit?

Pretty cool, but I just use the icons from those Vista Transformation Pack things.

Did you use wordpad? I got that same error when using that, use notepad.

Here's a tip, this seems to work in Vista x64 (and possibly x32) as well. I used it to change my card reader icons ;-)

Does this work in Windows XP Home edition?
I've tried that code and one other;
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;Drive Icons
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\A]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\A\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\windows\\Resources\\Icons\\A.ico"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\windows\\Resources\\Icons\\C.ico"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\D]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\D\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\windows\\Resources\\Icons\\D.ico"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\windows\\Resources\\Icons\\cd.ico"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\F]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\F\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\windows\\Resources\\Icons\\F.ico"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\G]
@="C:\\windows\\Resources\\Icons\\G.ico"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\G\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\windows\\Resources\\Icons\\G.ico"

;Folder Icon
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons]
"3"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Resources\\Icons\\Folder.ico"
I found this at another forum, and it's about the same code as yours, and I've also tried to combine it.
Nothing works =/

As I said, is it because of Home Edition or is my computer just hating me? <3
