this n00b again

where can i access the control panel for the windows task bar? my Gf says her task bar is missing, no where to be found. it's ususally at the bottom, but when you want to access the controls you just right click on it. but it's not there.

she tried restarting it. Nothing. when she presses the windows key, the start menu comes up but not the start button. i think its probably like a virus or something. what to do.

It may be a virus, but if you need to access the control panel the hard way...

windows key -> control panel -> taskbar

Hopefully it's only a problem there, but it does sound more like a virus or corrupt directory.

Once you get there, turn off auto-hide and unlock it. Then try and see if there's a thin bar at the bottom and pull it up (the proper cursor should appear).

i bet you the task bar was minimized to a zero bar...



Remember, the taskbar can be on any side of the screen... bottom, top, left or right...

move the cursor to the bottom, top, left or right side of the screen... Look for the cursor to change... if it changes to a <|--|> shaped icon... just left click... and drag a little (1/4 inch) towards the center of the screen. you should see a grey line when you drag.

you can also click and drag with the standard pointer to move the taskbar from bottom, top, left or right...

Yeah, the panel is called "taskbar and start menu." If it's not there, I'd say you have a corrupt Windows install.

LOL at first i thought it probably got moved somewhere else like leftside or top, but she said she checked. so i said may be you minimized it all the way, then she said that she didn't. so i said okay just goto control panel and start menu / task bar but its not there. so its probably some virus or some how it got corrupt.

she only uses the computer to go online and chat and web surf. anyways thanks for the help. i'll probably have to go look at it. It's hard to explain stuff to people. lol

Or you could not be looking at the Classic View of the Control Panel...



Click Classic View... then it is Taskbar and Start Menu...
