i hate it.

so my laptop crashed the other day and I thought I'd try vista since i got a free trial of it on CD from work. my laptop is a 4 year old Dell D600 so i'm a little surprised it was enough able to run vista.

so the install takes about an hour, a little long, but doesn't bother me at all. i go though the setup and everything looks pretty and new which i like. then i get to logged on for the first time and the first thing i see is "cancel" or "allow." i spend the next hour or so getting updates and drivers (which vista automatically knew i needed). so i finally turn that feature off, but now i wonder if i have any sort of protection at all.

overall vista seems to be user friendly if you are an average user. i would consider myself the above average user and for me everything in vista just seems more complicated than it needs to be. everything i look for seems to be about 10 menus deep, and when i finally get there i have no idea how i did it or how to get back a menu or two.

and on a side note, i'm still in love with the classic view for the control panel, if windows every gets rid of that i WILL be getting rid of windows.

Yeah, I still use the classic menus as well. They're just so much easier!

Vista like any new OS takes some getting used to. I'm sure you can figure it out soon enough. I would recommend just sticking a Linux distro on that laptop, though.

i have slackware 12 on dvd, and i've used some other linux distros before so i will probably try that in a week or so. right now all i use my laptop for is just a wireless bridge so my desktop can get internet until my pci wireless card gets here.

UAC only protects you from yourself, not from virea. you have Virus scanners for those.
and IMO everything else you mentioned are good points...

BTW, you go up in the filetree by clicking on the respective foldername in the adress bar.
