Default dvd drive not working in vista

i don't know when, but something has happened to my dvd drive. when i put discs in, i know it can read them because it tells me how much space is left free on the disc but when i open it nothing is shown and when i insert game cds nothing shows up and when i click the icon it keeps telling me to insert a disc. what's going on?

I've been asked about this problem quite a bit from people with Vista... though I don't know of a fix.

Seems to be a common problem though.
