I'm really behind right now on all things pc, so bear with me if these seem basic or are asked all the time.

1) Not any really compelling reason except for DX10. I like to be ahead of the pack on computer things so I went ahead and upgraded.
2) 1GB is the absolute minimum you should run Vista on. 2GB is a lot better and recommended even if all you do is basic office things and browsing and stuff. 3) If you have hardware with XP drivers but not Vista drivers, x86 is recommended because you can use the XP drivers. If not, x64 is recommended mostly because if you are going to upgrade your RAM past 2GB you can run into addressing problems.

On #2, I had no problems running Vista with 1GB, even some light gaming (if you consider 120FPS in CS:S, 1280x1024, 4xAA, 16xAF light gaming) ran perfectly smooth, so I would recommend 1GB for browsing the web, word processing etc. with Vista.

1) If you enjoy a rich computing experience that's fun from beginning to end then go Vista. If you just need something to run DX9 games on go XP.
2) Seriously 2GB is what you should have to get the most from Vista 3) The 64 is a lot faster but with certain hardware won't work. If all of your hardware has Vista 64 drivers then by all means get 64.

If you are running a laptop, I would actually recommend 32-bit Vista.
It is unlikely you will have 4GB RAM on it. In most cases, you won't be running any intensive scientific/mathematical/modeling apps on it. Since laptops often require special drivers (touchpad, NIC, graphics, motherboard, ect), the 32-bit will ensure better compatibility.

Yeah they could be using older hardware with 32bit drivers from XP. In that case your hardware wouldn't be compatible and cause major headaches.
You could call the manufacturer and ask them if their drivers are approved for Vista 64.

#1 There is really no reason NOT to use Vista now.
#2 2GB is a MUST. #3 32-bit will be a better choice.
