Angry Svchost.exe crazy, please help.

When XP loads up, it's really slow and I hit ctrl+alt+del to see what processes is using resources. Nothing out of the normal until all my apps are done loading then suddenly svchost.exe is using 50% on my CPU and a good amount of RAM.

I've been looking for this on Google and I couldn't find anything good (except for a thread where a guy had the exact same problem and finally made a post saying "tnx everyone, i fixed it" .... yes, without saying how....)

Any ideas why? and how to fix? This is really annoying me. Can it be a virus? (I'm running Nod32)

Please help me.

"svchost.exe" is normal.
"scvhost.exe" is a virus.

Make sure your definitions are up to date. If NOD32 doesn't detect anything with a indepth scan, try downloading AVG free and scanning with it.

Also, sometimes windows can error when loading. Have you tried restarting again?

Thanks Murlocke but I am sure it's the correct file (Svchost.exe) and I had this problem before, forgot to mention that.. Previously I fixed it with a format but it's less than a month since the last time.

It can still be infected by a virus right? Anyone know where the file is located so I can try a (futile) manual scan?

EDIT: NOD32 is updated alright, and I thought it was bad to run two anti virus programs on a computer.. Finally, it does that everytime I boot.

Svchost is the generic name for the DLL host, you can't get rid of it. When you say it is using 50%, do you mean that under the "CPU" heading? If so, it is not really using 50% of the CPU, it is using 50% of the total CPU power that is being used. That is, if 2% of the total CPU is being used (check under the "performance" tab), svchost.exe is using 1% of the CPU.
svchost.exe is in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. (C:\WINDOWS\system32 in XP)

thats not true, in task manager 50% means 50%, since idle cpu is also in %, and everything adds to 1

o.O

I'm not sure if I did understand that... Taskmanager says it's using 50% (almost 100% on core #2)

Danny - I know, but 50% usage is not normal in XP.

EDIT: NOD32 checked out ok on the file.. Can it be that Windows messed up..?

Try downloading AVG free and doing a scan with that. There was a time where NOD32 didn't detect a virus for me and I had to remove it with a different program. Alot of antivirus programs only have like 95-99% of the viruses out there, so its possible NOD32 doesn't have the virus (if you have one) in its database.
