Default Thinking about installing vista

I have a copy of vista ultimate, and i'm trying to decide whether to install it or not. It won't have a huge impact on games as I have 2 gigs of ram and a good gfx card. Sound like a good idea? I heard somewhere that ati cards are better with vista than nvidias. Am I right?

there's this one thing i keep on recalling when Vista is brought up... "upgrade is just a term for replacing old problems with new ones"

Anyways... As of now I'm comfortable with XP... i have full access to Vista Ultimate as well.... but would never upgrade to it.... mainly because it has absolutely no new features that catch my eye except for it having a monopoly on DX10.... also the OS is a lot more taxing than XP, meaning a slight drop in performance with games.... not to mention all the new issues you'll no doubt end up having to deal with....

My personal opinion? Don't bother until you get DX10 games as that is the only desirable feature of Vista

I have Vista Ultimate, and installed the 64bit version. After a week I reverted back to XP Pro. The reason was games were impacted big time. NFS:Carbon would not run, NFS:Most Wanted would not install, The Sims2 would not install, Fable would not run, Star Wars Empire at War would run for about 2 minutes and then lock up. All these games were patched to the latest versions, except the ones that would not install. I've decided to just dual boot Vista and XP for now. So I would reccomend sticking with XP for now and wait for Vista to get SP1 or alot more updates.

Aside from DX10...which isn't all that compelling to me. Is there any thing else that would make Vista appealing? About the only thing I hear is the look of it and my Vista 32bit on my new laptop is set to windows classic...just like my XP desktop. MS had better contine to include the windows classic look in all future OS's as well.

What else does Vista offer? All I hear is bad comments and the only good comments are that it looks awesome and it can open some types of programs slightly faster, but if XP can open it in about a second I don't think I would even notice it if it went faster. Plus I know there are a lot of compatability issues yet. I still have trouble with Adobe Acrobat on my 32 bit Vista even with it set to XP compatability mode.

As for the look of it I personally think it looks like some one puked on the screen...the default setup had crap every where

Agreed Vista eats games alive, after having problems recently I reverted back to XP for a while and was amazed to see all the frames of my games.

I like the interface and it has fun features built in liike voice recognition and its own screen capture program but all in all you can find a program for XP to do anything that Vista can offer.

So I say do yourself a favor and set up a dual boot for now if possible to ease yourself in without destroying your current XP install so reverting will be painless if you decide to.

Install it on virtual pc 2007 then it,s like a dual boot system and if you don't like it then uninstall it, and you still have XP.

I think Vista runs smoother as a whole, it just takes some work setting things up properly for your needs. I turned off the sidebar and UAC and I was all good. 20fps out of my usual 90fps dropped in games but I barely notice. I turned vsync on so it looks the same all the time when I play..

I have a tri-boot setup xp pro - Vistaultimate32- ubuntu
I agree with Zach Vista feels smooth as glass with just about everything I do and there aren't as many hiccups as I have with xp. The frames you loose in games are dependant on alot of things but personally I play at 1280x1024 with nice quality settings and vista runs fine as wine. The recent patches have heavily improved vista's game performance as far as overall glitches and it just seems alot more slick for everyday desktop use. Now the bad side, the firewall is a PITA and it'll drive you batty with it's constant need for attention but when you get passed that it's pretty nice. There aren't any ip blockers out for it yet so IMHO that leaves it too open to use full time atm.

I don't care what others say. But from my experience Vista works great. We have both have 2GB of RAM and similar video cards, so our experience should be similar. Gaming with Vista is really no longer an issue. ATI and Nvidia drivers have both gotten a lot better after all these months. Gaming performance is just about the same now. Vista is a very smooth OS. At times it may appear slow because of Superfetch. But after a minute about of time, it get's really better. It's smoother than XP.

For people who criticize Vista for gaming, I would assume the last time you had experience with Vista (if you ever did) was months ago. So I sya go ahead ans install it. However, be aware that not all software support Vista yet. However, the majority do. Also, some games won't work because older games are not written for Vista. If you have an old game that you MUST have, check on those first.

I say install Vista.
