Is this a good idea or will tha mean that drive C will only be allocated to XP and then on installation of Vista the Vista OS will be reading another drive letter (since XP will be installed on C????)?
Does anyone who have done this know the answer?
This guide is for rig that has xp or vista preinstalled and you want to install vista or xp to it. If you do a fresh install, you don't need to follow this guide. In your case, it will be xp and then vista.

Default ntldr problem

Please help, if possible.
First of all, I'm impressed how competent you are in this matter. I tried to use your set of instructions to dual boot XP on my Vista installed. I successfully installed XP and rebooted several times. That part worked fine. Then I used VistaBootPro exactly as instructed. After rebooting I get the message -
Windows failed to start e t c. File: \ntldr Status 0xc000000e.
However if I continue, the next screen gives me options to boot either XP or Vista. XP, as I said, doesn't boot while Vista does. Also, what I noticed is when I created a new partition it was assigned a letter I. When I boot to install XP from CD my newly created drive was offered as drive H with no option to change. Does this matter?
Anyway, I appreciate any help, if possible.
Thanks in advance.

Serge

Dual-boot is relatively easy to implement if you have two hard drives. However, it becomes a sticky issue if you only have one hard drive with have XP or Vista installed. This quick guide shows how to create dual-boot on your single hard drive.

BEFORE YOU WANT TO TRY, PLEASE BACKUP YOUR DATA!
  • If you have Vista installed and want to dual boot XP:

    1. BACKUP DATA IF YOU HAVE IMPORTANT DATA.
    2. Decide the drive space for XP. I recommend at least 40G.
    3. Go to Vista/Control panel/Administrative tools/Computer management/Disk management. Select primart partition. Right click and select Shrink volume to shrink the primary partition. For example, you have 500G hard drive and want 100G for xp. Shrink the primary partition from 500G to 400G.
    4. Select new created volume and format the new partition -100G. Vista will automatically assign the drive letter. Let’s say drive D
    5. Insert you XP setup CD/DVD and Reboot PC.
    6. Install the XP on the new drive D.
    7. Reboot to XP. You won’t be able to see Vista at this point.
    8. Whe you log in XP. Download the free VistaBootPRO. If you don’t have Internet connection, please download it before installation. Here is the link.
    9. Install and run the VistaBootPro. You must have .net framework 2.0 install in order to run VistaBootPro. If you don't have, download from Microsoft and install it.
    10. Open the VistaBootPro. Bypass the backup message.
    11. Click System Bootloader. Select 'Windows Vista Bootloader' and 'all drivers'.
    12. Click 'Install Bootloader' button to install.
    13. Select 'Run Diagnostics' from Diagnostics menu. You will see the Vista and XP menu.
    14. Rename them if you want. PLEASE DON’T CHANGE BOOT DEVICE IN THE 'CHANGE BOOT DEVICE' OPTION BOX! DO NOT!
    15. Click 'Apply Udpate' to update settings.
    16. Reboot PC. You should see the boot options for Vista and XP.

  • If you have XP installed and want dual boot Vista:

    1. BACKUP DATA IF YOU HAVE IMPORTANT DATA.
    2. Download free Linux Live CD image and copy to new CD. If you don’t have Internet connection, please download it before installation. Here is the link. I am using the version 3.3.
    3. Boot from CD and use 'root' as user name and 'root' as password in the login screen.
    4. You will see the red screen similar XP desktop window, select System/File/QTParted from menu bar.
    5. Select resize to resize the primary partition. For example, you have 500G hard drive and want 100G for XP. Resize the primary partition from 500G to 400G. Enter proper number for free space in the 'free space after' field.
    6. Format the new partition and select commit from the File menu to complete the task.
    7. Rremove Linux Live CD, logout, restart to reboot PC.
    8. You will/may see hardware change message to require reboot again.
    9. Second reboot and get in XP.
    10. Verify the new partition in XP File explorer.
    11. Insert Vista CD.
    12. Install Vista on the new partiton.
    13. Reboot. You should have dual boot option.
    14. Change the boot sequence by using the startup and recovery in the Vista boot manager.

Sorry to hear this. It seems the xp of boot record points to the different driver letter. Here is a way to resolve this. Give it a try to see if it works.

Locate the ntldr and ntdetect.com from your XP cdrom, copy them to drive H (xp partition but not the vista partition) and reboot.

As usual, please backup data before you do this.

Could i get some help please? I used to Dualboot with xp/vista, but then i didn't know how to uninstall vista and i simply formated the partition, and now i'm stuck with booting from the Dualboot screen, where Vista is still available.
I tried to edit the boot.ini file, but no luck, so i'm down to my final fronteer. If i don't get any good advice i'm gonna break my harddrive!

So you uninstalled, format that partition and reinstall Vista. Is this correct? If this is correct, you can open the VistaBootPRO and remove the one that you don't want there. Always backup data before you try yhis.

I copied these two files into I (because I can boot only into Vista and here this drive is I). Now the system boots into XP without asking. Then I tried, quite randomly, VistaBootPro, and in Diagnostic screen I tried to either double click or something else to make Vista lit in blue. Next time the system boots into Vista without askink. In other words, a next time the system will boot into whatever is lit in blue in VistaBootPro. Actually, when I tried to install XP I expected the new system would run all the same programs that were installed in Vista. However, I'm not even able to start Internet with IE in XP.
I feel sorry to bother you and if this gets too complicated I simply get back to my Vista which I hate wholeheartedly. Do you think it's still possible to get what I need?
Many thanks.

Serge
