Question RAM and Vista...

ive been doing a lot of researching on whether or not i should get vista yet or not... most ppl have said that you need, well not need but recommend, 4 gigs of ram. i have already ordered my ram, so ill have 2x1 gigs of ocz 8500 ram, using an evga 680i a1 mobo.

now other ppl have said that using 4x1 gig sticks in your mobo is not recommended as it will overload certain components (memory controller and so on)...

so then, what do i do?

2gb is fine for Vista. you don't need more than 2gb in gaming. but 4 gb doesn't hurt and is definitely NOT overkill. my system uses 45% of the 4gb just idling. with some regular programs running, it gets to 70~75%. when I am working with small models in AutoCAD and webtv in bg, memory usaged can jump over 90%.

I wouldn't recommend 4x1g setup with 680i chipset. Unless you dont mind running loosen timing (loosen than advertised). I had 4 stickes of OCZ PC2-8500 with EVGA 680i A1 board and have trouble find a 100% stable clock / timing.

But this new Asus P5K deluxe on other hand, have no problem with my new OCZ FlexXLC pc2-9600.

I'm running 2GB on Vista x86 now with no problems. On Monday, I'll have 4GB on Vista x64. I'll be sure to drop by & let you know how it works. I've also heard what psun say about looser timings, but others have no problems (on 680i boards). Vista allocates a greater percent of your RAM based on how much you have available. Thus, a 1GB system has allocated less PERCENT total RAM than 2 or 4GB.

FYI 4x1gb or 4 stick in general, generally effect memory latency OCs speed isnt really an issue though its slightly effected as well

Okay. So, I installed my new RAM last night. As IWubINTEL says, I was unable to POST with 4-4-4-8-1T, even at 800 on my 8500s, so I ran reference at 800 (2.2v). I didn't try higher just yet (tonight), but I did notice that Vista x86 only notices approximately 3.3GB of my 4 (noted in cpl > system), whereas CPU-Z correctly identifies the correct sticks. My impression is max RAM was 4 for x86 and 16 for x64. This weekend, I will install x64 & report back if anyone still cares.
