Default Windows XP Home and Dual-Core?

Iv been XP Home forever now, pretty much since it was released with all my rigs. Never had any huge problems to really complain about, and it looks like its more stable than Vista. But anyway, it seems that it only uses one core constantly. I have all my mobo drivers installed.

Like, when im converting big files (3gb+) that takes 50% cpu (or one core) and thats i can use, so it slows everything else down, like WMP and Mozilla and AIM.

So what im trying to do, is set the affinity and see if that helps. So i set the converting file to CPU 0 and set everyhing else to CPU1 and it did nothing at all.

Doesnt XP take advantage of dual cores or no?

Weird. I don't expect that it would need a hotfix, I know that XP Pro utilizes dual cores without a hitch. Does your CPU usage ever rise above 50%? If not then there's something going on with XP's load balancing that may need to be patched, or require a beefier OS.

You can try the patches released by AMD. I didn't need them, but I use XP Pro.

I had a buncha wierd problems when I first installed my 4200x2 in XP PRO. My FPS in HL2/CS:S for example would go at 300FPS then bounce to 20 for a frame, then back to 240 and back to 40 (switched abouyt 10 times a second...made for choppy ganmeplay...)...I installed the Dual-Core optimizer from AMD's website and my FPS settled nicely.

Im pretty sure i installed the dual-core optimizer thing, but i guess i can download it again just to make sure.

No, i havent seen my CPU go above 50% for normal usage, and when i do try and run other things while its a 50%, the program using all that will then drop to around 26% and it will dedicate more of that core to the other program i just opened rather than sending it to the other core like i think it should.

Iv had this X2 installed for almost a year now, and iv just now noticed this. But i can force both cores to load with a cpu tester.

so it is using both cores, but only 50% on each core? Are you looking at this in task manager?

No, 50% is only one core. 100% is both cores. But anyway, i think its fixed.

Thanks to the guy who suggested the AMD dual core optimizer! Dude, my rig is like 3 times faster now, boot up is within seconds, literally. And the second i click something its fully loaded up. Its amazing. And im only at 2ghz.

I feel like my X2 has finally been unleashed. After a year....

It does. But it stutters at points in Stalker while i was just playing, but other than that its seemless. I think the driver is effecting the memory and thats why i get random stutters in gameplay.

I dont think the dual-core optimizer really fixed the problem but it did make some apps much faster but all in all it was worse. It caused major instability with 3 ram sticks (1.5gb) as opposed to 1gb. And with gaming it was kinda glitchy with Stalker whereas without the optimizer it was seamless.

Basically its more trouble than its worth to me....I think its my 3rd ram stick thats messing it up but id much prefer 1.5gb to 1gb and that optimizer.
