it's rather annoying, but the easiest method is to download hirins boot CD, burn that and it will boot when you turn on the pc. run one of the mfg editors, use that to clear the MBR and rebuild it.

Vista does not come with fdisk which you would usually use, but you can boot into a dos prompt using the original vista install dvd and run diskpart

the format command won't clear the first 64 sectors of the hard drive which includes the mbr

put your vista dvd in the drive, boot from it, select the appropriate language, click repair at the bottom of the window.once the repair menu loads up select command prompt. once the prompt comes up, enter the following "fixmbr" then hit return no quotes obviously

well then as I said hirins boot cd has heaps of tools to edit mbr properly, I would trust that over anythin microsoft offer especially when dealing with such a delicate file.

fixmbr doesnt work,

you have to do

bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

(once your vista disc is in the drive, and you have entered the recovery console...)
