Just create a new partition from the data partition. Install new OS on the new partition. (MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL ON THE CORRECT PARTITION OR LOSE YOUR DATA)

Just defrag your D: drive (so all the files currently on it aren't scattered all over the partition) Then just create the new partition within the D: drive. If I were you I would also back up the data in case something goes wrong.
EDIT: No, you don't need to delete the partition.

you dont have to make a new partition and destroy your data, you can use something like partition magic or the free Ranish Partition Manager to resize it without losing any data, and create a new one on your data partition.

I have done the same thing your wanting to do. I dual boot XP PRO and Vista 64 Ultimate. I used Western Digital's "Data LifeGuard Tools" disk that came with my 500 gig drive. I partitioned my drive into a 120 gig for XP, a 111 gig for Vista and the rest on a partition for storage. Then just installed both OS's on to the respective partitions. Now when I boot up I get an option to boot to either OS. Works pretty neat!

Try downloading G-Parted. It's available as a bootable .ISO that you can burn onto a CD and then boot from. Defrag your Data partition and then boot into G-Parted and then resize your Data partition. Then boot from your Vista CD and install to the partition that G-Parted created. If you follow these steps vista will recognize that you have XP in your bootloader and will allow you the option to boot to Vista or "Earlier Version of Windows" when you power on.
