Default Device manager problems.

I have been searching all day for the right drivers to get my laptops ethernet to work. I downloaded them from Lenovas website and put them on my laptop with a flash drive. The installation instructions then got to a point where it says to go to device manager:network adapters, and it will be listed there to install.
I dont have anything listed that says nextwork adapters and Ive looked through all of the other categories and they arent listed under them either. what am I doing wrong? Why is this so difficult just to make my newly installed windows to have internet????

Just to make sure you are in the right place (I'm sure you are):
Right-click 'My Computer">click 'manage'>click 'Device Manager>there should be a list with many categories>under 'monitors' there should be 'Network adapters'...no?
Could you link to the drivers you are downloading?

I am in the right place. There is no listing for monitors, no listing for network adapters. all of the drivers are missing from the categorie "other devices" Which consist of ethernet, video, pci controllers. This is an older XP disk so it has service pack one on it.
The link to the drivers is right here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-54046

What do you mean "put them on" ? Did you run an installation program or what ? Post a link to the drivers and fully-specify what driver you are talking about .

Also post a link to the laptop. Please confirm we are talking about XP and not Vista.

The device should be listed, but not "to install". The installation should have happened when you ran some kind of "set-up" for your ethernet drivers.

Are there any red of yellow flags in Device Manager ? Click "show hidden devices" under "action" and list fully all yellow and red flagged devices.

In Device Manager there should be an area that says something like "Add New Hardware" or similar. If it's not there, then it's in Control Panel. Run that, and have the wizard find the drivers stored on your USB drive, if possible.

Sometimes the WRONG driver gets installed and that can cause some difficulties. That's why the red & yellow flag question is so critical.

It's completely your laptop manufacturer's fault. Is this a cheap laptop ?

Why are you installing windows ? It should have come pre-installed. Are you using some kind of OEM Install Disk ? Perhaps one for a different manufacturer ?

Or was there some kind of problem that prompted a reinstall. Perhaps that problem was a hardware issue, and this is only Part 2 of the same problem.

Please provide more information in greater detail.

by put them on the laptop, i meant with a flash drive. I cant install service pack 2 because I do not have internet on the laptop.
I had Linux on it at first and decided to put windows back on it. Now its causeing all these problems with missing drivers.
all of the yellow marked ones are the "other devices" which include ethernet controllers, multimedia audio controller, network controller, pci modem, sm bus controller, unknown device, video controller.

I just displayed the hidden drivers and the network category is now visible. However, when I click on it, it doesnt show the Intel reading like the read me says it will on that link I gave.

Well, I put SP2 on an external harddrive, plugged it into the laptop. Everything was going fine, then half way it says ( cannot transfer file such and such). Ive tried clicking retry, I even clicked cancel then the messege went away and then came back.
What the heck is going on with this thing. What would cause windows to not just load and go????

Okay, that's your problem.

You need to run a set-up program. It is not enough merely to have the USB stick in the laptop, nor do I think you can manually install them by pointing to the specific driver using the Add Hardware Wizard.

I am not sure how this laptop varies as my experiences is mostly with desktop PC's, but from what you describe you need to install what I would call the "Motherboard Drivers" if this were a Desktop.

All those devices you list are taken care of by the M/B drivers. Usually they come on a CD disk. If you downloaded them onto a USB stick, they may either need to be run from the USB stick, uncompressed to the HD and run from there, or you may need to create a disk to run using the data as an image file.

Some drivers provided by manufacturers are just dll files that are placed in the main windows 32 system folder. IBM and Gateway I know do this. After clicking the exe or zip file, the dll's are extracted to the folder listed above. What you do is right click "my compter", select "properties", then "device manager", then find the question mark in network adapters. After that, right click and select update drivers. They should be found after that.

Also, if you are having problems installing XP SP2, you might have a bad install file, or a botched XP install.
