Default Uh, why does my computer take so long to boot

Ok, so about 6 or so months ago I was trying to make my computer boot faster (meaning load Windows and programs faster), and I deleted ctfmon from starting up automatically. Well, that caused some problems with my internet, so I had to have it start automatically again. Since that all happened, Windows takes what seems like forever to boot. My computer will show the desktop of my computer with no icons or anything and stay with that for 2 or 3 minutes. After 2 or 3 minutes Windows and all the programs that start up when my computer starts up will begin to load and everything will be fine. Any ideas what could be causing this? The only programs that start up when my computer boots is Aim, MSN, CCC, Atitool, and ctfmon.

Personally I would say that AIM has alot to do with the slow startup. I am saying that because I have noticed a huge increase in my startup speed... if that made since. Recently my fiance and I formatted both of our computers , instead of downloading AIM and MSN messengers, we used Trillian, it has AIm, MSN, Yahoo, IRC, and ICQ all in one program. Ever since we started using Trillian for messengers, we haven't had any problems. Well good luck on fixing your problem.

But for an even better experience, I'd recommend Win95. Even more skinned down, which means MORE PERFORMANCE!

if it were me, I'd run backups, reformat the drive(s) and re-install the OS. She'll be running like new again guaranteed.

Until he re-loads all the programs from his backup.

AIM is garbage as suggested get rid if it.

You need to open your task manager and see what processes and or services are running after everything loads it sounds as if something or somethings are running at startup that should not be. There a number of things that can cause this problem one of the biggies is a virus most likley a trojan of some sort, do a thorough virus and spyware scan and see what it finds if anything. Use a root kit removal tool even just to cover your bases.

Defrag, defrag DEFRAG,disk clean up,registry repair. There are just so many things that can cause this behavior in Windows try these things first and see if it solves the problem.

Re-formatting and doing as fresh install won't do you a bit of good if you load a virus right back onto your system from your back-up files.
