512mb on vista is INSANE.
I had basic, and according to task manager, i was using ~760 mb of ram upon startup. You'd be thrashing like crazy trying to run vista, even home on 512 mb's of ram.

Thats vistas new thing. It pre load programs on ram so it will start faster. But when you lanch a game that require much ram vista will automaticly free up the ram.

I had 512 MB RAM on my old desktop running the Vista RC, it worked alright but I really didn't do much in it. And I really don't know why the minimum requirements are different, they all do the same thing, they just have different features....I guess some of the features could require more system resources.

Vista Home Premium/Business/Ultimate have more features that require at least 1GB or RAM. & frankly speaking as a Home User/Gamer you need nothing more than Vista Home Premium. I recommend 2GB of RAM for Vista either way.
