Hopefully in the next few weeks I will be upgrading my mobo, ram, and cpu which will technically make my pc "new". My question is how will activation work? Can I just reactivate windows (my hdd isn't changing) or will I have to format and reinstall?? I have the Windows Vista Ultimate retail version btw.

You should do a reinstall, but you will have to call Microsoft every time you reload after that. You can try messaging FrankenPC. He had a post on how to change out hardware without reinstalling. Here is his thread.

edit: I saw that he did get the activation popup after a couple of days, but you can still ask him if he was able to activate it or if he had to call.

You really should reinstall windows after a motherboard change regardless of activation, for driver issues, etc.

You will only have to call if you've activated in the last 6 months. It only takes 5 minutes anyway, I do it on a regular basis
