Repair the OS, but your programs won't work. Change the drive back to C, then repair again.

Do an xp repair,use your xp disc,do not rpair it the first time it ask you ,but repair it the 2nd time it ask u.

Also to note, if you disconnect all your usb devices, and leave only the hd you are installing windows on plugged, it will install it as C drive every time. If you have a printer with a card reader, an ipod, or an external drive, it will sometimes load that as the C drive.

It happened to me because I had to use a boot disk for my SCSI card. No manner of tweaking or renaming ended the problems caused by all the pointers that it was installed on the D: drive or that C: was the CDROM drive. There was just too much screwed up pointers in the registry and only a clean install fixed it.

It happened to me because I had other windows-readable partitions on the drive already. I ended up reinstalling
