Default Error Loading Operating system

My friend got this error so he wants me to fix his pc. I tried booting in safe mode and also Last Known Good config..etc. None of those worked so I burned an ISO I downloaded from ECADEMY(Not illegal) onto a cd. I went into the Bios and put "Boot from cd" then I restarted and popped in the cd but nothing happened. Just a black screen with a c:/ thingy. Now what? I also tried installing Vista from my Retail version of vista but I kept getting a BSOD. What can I do? Thanks.

The error message is "Error Loading Operating System". I don't have the original Windows CD, that's why I had to burn the ISO. Any idea why the pc won't install Vista or XP? I have the retail CD of Vista so I don't see why it won't install at all.

if you only get the command prompt when you boot from cd then maybe your cd wasn't created/burned right. i don't know what ECADEMY is, but when you boot from the cd try doing a "dir" to see what folders and files are there. you might have to run it manually or something?

also, if you can get to the command prompt, try doing a fixmbr. that might do something good for you

Format your friend's hard drive in dos. You can get to dos through the Vista install CD. You are still going to need a key after sometime before the OS doesn't allow you to use the full version. He will still need to purchase a key. The retail version is a good idea if you want to upgrade your motherboard in the future. You still can't have it on two computers at once. I don't think the OS cares about a CPU upgrade but once you change your motherboard the OS looks at it as a different computer and after
awhile you will have to call microsoft and tell them what you did because the OS won't allow you to use the full version after a certain amount of time.
