Default Vista x64 SATA DVD-RW BSOD

Issue:
When I go to install Vista Business 64, I always get a BSOD. Sometimes I get the BSOD before doing anything, and sometimes it happens after it loads the install files and restarts. I was finally able to determine that its related to the SATA DVD-RW drive, so I unplugged it and finished the Vista installation

Once Vista Business 64 was installed and all of my drivers installed, I plugged in the SATA DVD-RW drive, and it worked fine for weeks. One morning out of the blue, I get constant BSOD apon startup, unless I unplug the drive.

I have an Asus SATA DVD-RW drive model DRW-1814BLT

Things I have tried:
My friend has an identical computer, but a different brand of SATA DVD-RW drive...and his symptoms are identical. I have changed SATA ports and cables, I have the latest motherboard BIOS and drivers. I have re-formatted and tried various versions of Vista...same results. I reset BIOS and even updated it to the latest version...no change.

Does Vista just have problems with SATA DVD-RW drives? My HDs are SATA and they work fine.

Thanks

I have the same model of DVDRW and use x64 Vista and don't have any problems. Is your system overclocked when you try to install your operating system? Other than that, all I can think of is that the BSOD's could be caused by conflicts between the SATA DVDRW and IDE optical drives if you have any.

My system isn't overclocked at all, I even reset the BIOS and updated it. My bios is basically stock with hardly any changes.

Oh also, I have nothing plugged into the IDE port.

Do you have IDE drives in your system? If so, try removeing them for now and then post back if this solves the problem. This sounds as though a possible jumper configuration issue as the BIOS may be struggleing to understand which o set as primary, SATA, or IDE. Be sure to try swiching SATA ports around as well, one of them may be faulty.
